The Tesla Wall Connector is the most convenient home charging system for Tesla vehicles. Conveniently, Wall Connectors can be mounted to a wall or post, indoors or outdoors. These charging units come with an attached 8.5’ or 24’ cable. As such, the placement of your Wall Connector is an important consideration when planning your charging station.
A Wall Connector can fully charge your Tesla Model S battery in six to nine hours, or your Model X battery in six and a half to ten hours. Chargers can be installed with any circuit breaker ranging from 15 to 100 amps, allowing the Wall Connector to fit almost any electrical system.
At AMPT Over Electric we suggest the Wall Connector have a power output that matches the onboard charger of the vehicle and a 60-amp circuit breaker.

Frequently Asked Questions
Tesla Home Charger Installation
How much does a Tesla Home Charger Cost?
Apart from the installation cost, the Tesla Home Charger is $500 and comes with a 24-foot cable. However, $500 is the basic cost of the EV home charger. The actual price of a Tesla home charger electrical installation ranges from $500 and $4000, depending on the cable, coring, trenching, fishing, and if it will be installed outdoor or indoors.
The cost of a Tesla Home Charger does not stop at $500. Several factors come into play when determining how much you will pay for a home charger installation for your Tesla EV. Generation 3 needs a 240-V outlet, while most homes install a 120V outlet. So, you should upgrade the outlet to a 240V outlet, which will most likely involve upgrading the entire electrical wiring, panels, and electric system. The amperage is the main factor, most Tesla home chargers require 30 – 80 amps.
Keep in mind that a Tesla Home Charger installation can cost an average of up to $1,800. However, if extensive electrical work, such as outlet upgrade, rewiring, and electrical panel upgrades, it could cost up to $4,000. Please contact us for a free estimate. We would need some information that will help us provide you with a feasible estimate. What is the Best Home Charger for a Tesla?
Choosing the best home charger for a Tesla could be challenging based on certain factors such as the unit cost, installation cost, and charge rate. Regardless, getting a Tesla charged faster is the dream of every Tesla owner.
Since its introduction, many tech geeks and EV owners have been trying to pick the best between the Gen 3 wall connector and Gen 2 high-powered wall connector. One noticeable difference between the Gen 2 and Gen 3 home charger is reducing the cable length from 24 feet to 18 feet.
However, Gen 2 wall connector remains the best home charger for Tesla. The Gen 2 home charger comes with a 24-foot thick and strong cable and can deliver up to 80 amps to the vehicle, while Gen 3 is limited to 48 amps. However, the Gen 2 connector can load-sharing with 4 connected units, sharing the same electric circuit charging simultaneously.
Meanwhile, the Gen 3 can load-share up to 16 connected units and wirelessly. There will not be a need for hard-working units together to communicate for load-sharing. The full functionality of the Gen 3 connector is being awaited.
Is a Tesla Charger Free?
A Tesla charger is not free, whether you want to install a home charger or stop by a Tesla’s supercharger station. Installing a Tesla home charger can cost from $500 to as much as $4,000, considering different factors involved.
Stopping by Tesla’s supercharger stations also costs some money, as you will be billed per kWh (Kilowatt-hour) per minute. Meanwhile, billing per minute involves charging at two speeds; Tier 1 and Tier 2. Tier 1 charges the vehicle below 60kW while Tier 2 charges above 60kW. However, Tier 1 is half the cost of tier 2.
Whether you charge at the home, office, or Tesla’s Supercharger station, you need to pay – it is not free.
What size breaker do I need for a Tesla Charger?
Installing a circuit breaker is essential for any electrical device to prevent damage to wiring, motors, and panels when the current exceeds the design limit. Tesla recommends installing a breaker, a safety device to protect your vehicle.
Tesla recommends installing a Wall connector with a circuit breaker matching the vehicle’s onboard charger capacities. Meanwhile, a wall connector may be installed with a breaker of lower amperage (amps) to support the existing electrical system. To know your Tesla’s maximum amperage, click the lightning bolt icon on the touchscreen.
With power rated at 240V (KW), the maximum Wall Connector outputs and corresponding circuit breaker sizes are indicated below:
Max Output (amps) Circuit Breaker (amps)
12 15
16 20
24 30
32 40
40 50
48 60
If you are installing a connector for the fastest charging, install a circuit breaker rated 100 amps. However, this power is not readily available in many homes or offices. Consequently, the High Power Wall Connector’s current setting can be adjusted or lowered for 40 to 100 amp breakers.
The logic behind the breaker’s size to install is that the circuit you will install must be able to deliver power at 80 percent of its rated capabilities, bringing us to the table above.
What is needed for a Tesla Home Charger?
A Tesla Home Charger makes charging your Tesla easy and hassle-free. With different chargers on the market, installing a Tesla Home Charger requires certain items for convenience and successful installation. Here are a few things needed for a Tesla Home Charger installation:
Enough power in the panel - Your home’s electrical panel is crucial when installing a Tesla Home Charger. The electrical panel must have sufficient capabilities to enable the charger to function optimally. We recommend a 200 amp electrical panel however, depending on your power usage in the home, a 100 amp electrical panel may work if power consumption is minimal.
Your panel should be at least 200 amps of current to be effective. Meanwhile, you can always upgrade the panel if necessary, especially if it is below 200 amps of current. Consequently, you need to hire a qualified electrician to ensure that no code is breached in your home. Find the right qualified electrician for an electrical panel upgrade. Whether you want to install Gen 2 or Gen 3 Tesla Home Charger, an electrical panel of 200 amps of current is most suitable.
